Investigate the sonic possibilities of the Pianodrome as an electro-acoustic instrument, then collaborate in an improvised group performance. Recommended for audio enthusiasts and musicians.
In this workshop, devised in collaboration with Steve Summers from Noisy Toys, we'll be exploring the sonic possibilities of the Pianodrome using a range of electro-acoustic devices, microphones, amplifiers and any other e-waste we can get our hands on.
We will experiment with upcycled e-waste using the Noisy Toys Scavengers’ kits, building a Robot Chicken device and then an auto-strummer which we can use on the acoustic infrastructure of the almighty Pianodrome itself, enhanced and amplified with portable contact microphone kits. We can find out how the (very prepared) piano at the heart of the Noisy Toys Acousatron works, and hear a short performance on it by Steve Summers.
We will dip our toes into the mysteries of electromagnetism with some backwards physics, tinker with the Dark Arts of audio feedback using the multitude of resonant strings available in this unique space, and generally muck about with funny noises.
Once we have explored and experimented with the sonic potential of our acoustic environment we will plan and rehearse an improvised Acousmatic performance, taking it in turns to conduct the ensemble, turning noise into music (or is it?).
The performances will be recorded and made available for download after the event.
Participants may invite friends and families along to witness the performance for free.
