A young Jazz trio showing prowess and promise shall grace our stage for this Saturday lunchtime concert!
Playing with style and finesse, these are definitely ones to look out for.
The Mackenzie Ewins Wright Trio (MEW Trio) features long time collaborators Finlay Mackenzie (Drum Kit), William Ewins (Double bass) and Douglas Wright (Piano). After forging a musical relationship studying together at the City of Edinburgh Music School, the trio’s unique sound was noticed by award winning jazz pianist Fergus McCreadie, who had been teaching Douglas at the time. Fergus – known for his Mercury Prize nominated trio – began mentorship of the group and set up a headline gig at Edinburgh’s famous ‘The Jazz Bar’. From here the trio went on to play headline sets at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, Dundee Jazz Festival and sold out slots at Bloc+ and the Basement Jazz Café. After a year out, during which the trio found themselves living in different cities, Finlay (Rising Star Finalist at the 2025 Scottish Jazz Awards) and William (BBC Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year Finalist) relocated - joining Douglas in London - and rekindled their bond with a fresh, mature new sound. The trio’s set of entirely original compositions with contributions from each member is not to be missed.
