Playing music together is a powerful way to develop musicianship. Ensemble playing builds listening skills, timing, and musical awareness while encouraging creativity and confidence. Come play together with musician Freya Rae!
Workshop Overview
This workshop will bring together young musicians aged 12–18 to explore traditional tunes in a collaborative, mixed-instrument setting. The session will be open to players of any instrument, provided they are not complete beginners and have some confidence with their instrument.
Participants will learn traditional tunes by ear, developing listening skills, musical memory, and a deeper understanding of phrasing and style. The group will then work together to arrange the tunes collectively, experimenting with harmony lines, accompaniment patterns, rhythm parts, and group dynamics.
The aim is to create a supportive and creative environment where young musicians can explore traditional music while learning how to play and arrange music together as an ensemble.
Why Group Music-Making Matters
Playing music together is one of the most powerful ways to develop musicianship. Ensemble playing builds listening skills, timing, and musical awareness while encouraging creativity and confidence.
For many young musicians, opportunities to play in informal mixed-instrument groups are limited, yet this type of setting mirrors how traditional music is often learned and shared. Learning by ear and collaborating on arrangements helps players develop adaptability, improvisation skills, and a stronger connection to the music.
The workshop will emphasise collaboration, creativity, and enjoyment, allowing participants to experience the energy and excitement of making music together.
