S!nk present a new live score to Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin, performed and recorded at the Pianodrome. Blending composition and improvisation, the band create a dynamic, multi-instrumental soundtrack that evolves in real time.
DOORS 19:30, Film Starts at 20:00 sharp
Over the past decade, S!nk have developed a distinctive body of live film scores, part-composed, part-improvised soundtracks for seminal silent films over a century old.
Having built the Pianodrome as a dream performance space for the band, we are excited to finally realise its full potential: recording these scores live, with an audience.
We begin with Battleship Potemkin.
To keep its revolutionary spirit alive, director Sergei Eisenstein is said to have proposed that a new score be created for the film every twenty years. Since then, composers from Shostakovich to the Pet Shop Boys have taken up the challenge. S!nk are delighted to present our own new live soundtrack to this landmark of cinema.
Inspired by the film’s opening card, which suggests that an idea can spread and gather force until its revolutionary power tears reality itself, our score unfolds in the same way. Simple musical fragments evolve through live composition and improvisation, building into rich, shifting textures. Using piano, voice, saxophones, strings, electric guitar, loops, and found/electronic percussion, the music grows in intensity alongside the film.
This is a rare chance to experience a new score being recorded live; an immersive encounter with one of cinema’s most powerful works.
