Event Info
Over the past decade, S!nk have developed a distinctive body of live film scores, part-composed, part-improvised soundtracks for seminal silent films over a century old.
Having built the Pianodrome as a dream performance space for the band, we are excited to finally realise its full potential: recording these scores live, with an audience.
S!nk are delighted to invite you to join us for the second in our series of original film score live recordings in the gorgeous ambience and pin-drop acoustic of our very own Pianodrome amphitheatre in Bruntsfield. As part of a select audience your listening and perception of the film and score in the moment will bring a quality of attention which sculpts and lifts our performance.
The film: Nanook of the North (Dir. Robert Flaherty, 1922, 78mins)
Inuit hunter Nanook and his family confront their unimaginably harsh living environment with such ingenuity and humour that we can only watch in wonder. Perhaps equally remarkable in a very different way - particularly given that his first draft caught fire and was lost - is that protean filmmaker Robert Flaherty followed them in 1922 with his film camera to the far North, practically giving birth to the genre of documentary filmmaking in the process.
This is one of our favourite film scores. Together we improvise, following in the footsteps of Nanook on the hunt, using found materials, bones, ice, leather. Arctic squalls and frozen seas are painted in broad washes of electro-acoustic sound. The epic landscape and intimacy and lightness of family life are woven together in a way which, 100 years on, carry extraordinary resonances.
"Exquisite musicianship. You bring the magic. S!nk don’t just track a film they create a whole world.” Adrin Neatrour, Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle
