Marine Robot Lab

Discover the brilliant machines that help us understand what lies beneath the waves in this fascinating demonstration that reveals the surprisingly inventive world of marine conservation.

10:00am ‐ 10:45am
(various times)
Stranraer Oyster Festival
Breastworks Car Park, 13 Market Street, Stranraer, DG9 7RF

Information

This is a fun introduction to marine science robotics, suitable for children and adults.
Join six scientists and researchers from the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) as they showcase their ingenious creations on Stranraer's beach and harbour. These aren't your typical robots, they're custom-built underwater explorers, each designed to investigate specific aspects of the marine world.

Some of these innovative machines will soon be used as part of the Solway Coast and Marine Project (SCAMP), such as the remote-controlled paddleboards equipped with underwater cameras.

The scientists behind these inventions will be on hand to explain not just what their robots do, but why they invented them in the first place. You'll discover that marine conservation is as much about engineering creativity as it is about biology, and that some of the most important environmental work happens at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and old-fashioned curiosity.

Perfect for curious minds of all ages, this session is about where conservation meets engineering and brilliant minds create machines that let scientists explore the underwater world without getting wet!

10:00-10:45am, 11:00-11:45am, 2:00-2:45pm, 3:00-3:45pm Limited to 20 participants per session - booking strongly recommended. Location: Beach (meet at SCAMP gazebo near harbour).

This event is delivered with Solway Coast and Marine Project (SCAMP) – Landscape Connections, through their funding from National Lottery Heritage Fund. SCAMP is restoring the Solway’s coastal and marine habitats for the wellbeing of nature, people and climate.
